Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Why does 5-22-77 get no love?

This show never seems to show up on anyone's list from 1977. Here is a show that was Dick's 3rd release (DP#3). There are too many highlights to mention that would give this show the justice it deserves, but I'll mention a few:

The show opens with a super good version of Music Never Stopped, followed by what must be a top 5 version of Sugaree. Lazy Lightnin, Supplication and Dancin are all above average '77 versions. The 2nd set opens with the best version of Help on the Way that I've heard, followed by a super tight Slipknot and Franklin's. Throw in Estimated, Eyes, Wharf Rat, Terrapin and a rare '77 Dew and you must have of the best 2nd sets from the year with 4 strong Jerry songs in a row. I'll take this show over the new Hartford release any day. Buy this show if you dont have it and keep it right next to 2-14-68.

Even stranger, why does 5/13/77 get no love either?

I haven't heard 5/13 - is there anything that distinguishes it from the rest of May? or is it just another splendid concert from this era that just doesn't get mentioned, for one reason or another?

I'm nabbing it now.

It has the first "Jack-A-Roe" (and the best, IMO), a rockin' S/F, a smokin Other One, and what would have been my favorite ever OMSN if someone hadn't spilled beer into the SBD near the end of the show.

Plus a crystalline FOTD (slow version), a wonderful BEW and a killer opener of TMNS. I hope you relish it as much as I...

5/22 doesn't get much love from me these days because I let my girlfriend borrow that Dick's Picks, and like every cd that is in her possession for longer than 5 seconds it got returned in unplayable condition. I've since taught her to fear my wrath at messing with my music collection without permission.

Anyway yeah man it's a great show. I'm with Dick, Hartford just ain't all that for me, as well as 4/23/77.

Beer into the SBD eh. Always wondered what the hell happened there. A truly ugly scar on a beautiful performance. Easily my most listened to show from spring '77.

DUDE, I listen to this all the time. I wish they had released the whole show, but at least we have leftovers. The Help-Slip-Frank is incredible, one of the best, I think it even rivals 6/9 and 5/9 from the same year. Wow.

And the transition from Eyes to Wharf Rat is spectacular. Two straight minutes, give or take, of solo Jerry blowing my mind.

I wonder why, of all the songs they could have included on DP3, they put Sunrise on there? I'm not even someone who detests the song, it's just that, there was plenty of other stuff to choose from (BEW, Good Lovin', Ramble on Rose...)

Thanks, I'm going to listen to this today :)

Latvala was right!

Dick wasnt impressed with 5/28/77, though it was the first GD show that his son attended...

"Hartford was my son's 1st show. Hartford may 28 and the other [4/23/77] are not especially great from that era, there's too many."
Dick Latvala (Oct. 30, 1998)

In my opinion, 5/22/77 (DP #3) is as good as Barton, perhaps better? Its easily among the top three or four shows of '77. It might even be a 100 pointer?

I agree that it's close to 100 points, perhaps 98-99. It doesn't have the classic early '77 Scarlet-Fire or the Stephen-NFA jam like 5-8-77. I also believe that since this was an early DP that this show doesn't circulate as widely as others as it was pulled very early. It's too bad this wasn't a 3 cd release, I agree why have Sunrise?

I love the Hartford release too, but 5-22 seems a little richer. Estimated > Eyes > Wharf Rat > Terrapin > MD? Gimme a break.

11/01/77 has a mighty fine Music, but just a shorty compared to other shows that year.

I was still morning my father from 10/17/77.

I absolutely love this show! It's so good. And you're right about it getting overlooked. Definitely worth more attention than people give it.

I don't know, but it sure gets the love in my rotation. I've gradually become more of a '68-70 guy over the years but when I want some '77 its been a frequent choice choice. As someone else said, this was such an early selection for the DPs that it probably doesn't circulate as widely as 5/7-8-9, 5/25, etc. But that stretch of "Estimated > Eyes > Wharf Rat > Terrapin > Dew" is pretty fun, esp. the way they just pick "Terrapin" up mid-stream (personally I wish they'd done this more since I find the first part of that tune gets a little tedious sometimes).
